I recently went through a rough situation, so I thought I would pen this quick blog about positivity and dealing with stress.
One of my friends said to me, “I really admire how you remain positive in a tough situation.”
Truth is, I am inherently negative. Like, all the time. Just not out loud.
In fact, as I write this I’ve just gone through an anxiety attack. I’m stressed out of my mind. My head is pounding from all the tears I’ve shed, but I’m focused on moving forward.
I think that’s the key.
I’m able to get through the toughest situations by focusing on the future, but it’s not easy. It’s especially tough when you have anxiety. There’s always the constant self-doubt and the over-thinking.
For me, the key to staying positive has always been focusing on my future, focusing on the steps I need to take to feel better and get where I want to be
I know that after years of having to cope by myself, that I am the only one who is in control of my fate and ultimately, I’m the only one that can make myself feel better.
Negative mind = negative output
The fact is, you can exert all your energy being negative and it will have an impact on the quality of your life OR you can take that negativity and do something that will convert that into positive energy.
This blog is a prime example of that. Whenever I have feelings be it negative or positive, I try express them through this outlet or other outlets instead of focusing on those negative thoughts.
So what are some other ways I deal with negative energy?
Reading a book is always a classic way to channel your focus elsewhere and immerse yourself.
If you want to kill things (metaphorically of course), gaming is also a great outlet. I recommend games that have a balance of story and action, so you have equal parts focus and exertion (yes I am a nerd and I accept it).
Walking (when it’s not the dead of night) is always a great way to catch your breath and get some light exercise, but obviously winter is coming so probably not the best option.
Driving is also healing. Just pop in your fave tunes and drive somewhere you love (for me it’s Sephora obviously).
3. Netflix and chilling…alone:
There’s no shame in binging a drama series and crying your heart out. It’s healthy to get in touch with your emotions and Netflix is basically free therapy.
4. Stressed backwards is desserts:
By no meens am I suggesting binge-eating, but dessert has been known to get me in a positive mood.
5. Ranting to a friend:
It’s also great to talk to a friend and vent. Sometimes your friends know exactly what to say to make you feel better, sometimes they don’t. If they’re willing to listen at least, it definitely feels better to get the negativity off your chest instead of bottling it up.
These are only a few of the outlets, but there are so many other ways to bounce back (and if you guys have any other outlets please share them below!)
So, again, how do I remain positive in negative situations? I don’t, but I try my hardest not to let a dark cloud hang over me for long. For me, logically, there is no point in stewing in my anger/anxiety/regret because it does no good for me in the long run. I’m able to deal with my negativity by using the aforementioned outlets to deal with my negative emotions, and then I try to move forward.
If you’re going through a rough time, hang in there. Hopefully whatever you’re going through is only temporary. Be a strong support system for yourself, and as Justin Bieber once said, “you should go and love yourself.”
